At Pathways Provider Meeting on January 10, 2006, an award for the category of Spotlight on Creative or Outstanding Program was presented to ABC Human Services. Here are some comments about the nominee, ABC Human Services/Behind The Arts:

  • Programming includes an art studio, café and drama group.

  • The studio provides space, supplies, and instruction for creative art expression. where consumers work alongside people from the community. At the studio, everyone is considered an artist.

  • This program's art gallery has several art shows each year which is publicly advertised and draws 150 visitors. Art by consumers is displayed alongside art by non-consumers. Each show sells an average of 20 art pieces, with artists receiving commissions.

  • The agency also has a drama group that performs several productions each year. With space donated by a local church, the drama group performs for audiences of over 150 people with performers including consumers and non-consumers.

  • As an example of impact on consumers: a consumer with schizophrenia would not leave his home until his handmade Indian dolls began to sell and provided the need for him to be out in the community interacting with people in order to purchase doll-making materials. Another consumer with personality disorders and mild mental retardation performed a successful original comic act on stage and had the entire audience laughing. The overall impact is that consumers are having fewer symptoms, have tangible activities to look forward to, are able to connect with natural community resources and have natural rewards which validate them as contributing members of society.
